"How do I bypass the password on Windows 10?" I got asked a lot of times by this question, which finally pushed me to write a post about the topic. There are several ways to bypass login password on a Windows 10 PC or laptop, but it depends on whether or not you still remember the current one. If you knew the password, you could change it from from the account settings. If you forgot the password, then you have to resort to other means. This article shows you four different ways to bypass a forgotten Windows 10 password. Depending on the level of computer knowledge, you can choose best one from the suggestions to unlock the computer.
Unlike GUI-based programs we use mostly, command prompt is an utility for commands only. You have to input the commands to tell the computer what's to do. This method requires you to boot the locked computer from a Windows 10 installation DVD. If you don't have one, you can download the ISO file from Microsoft's website and burn it to a USB or DVD .Once you have the disk ready, follow the steps below:
Step 1: Insert the Windows 10 disk and boot your computer from it. To do this, you will need to boot up normally, and then press the F2 key or other special key to access the boot menu. Here, you can change the boot priority so the computer boots from the disk instead of the current Windows 10 installation files.
Step 2: Once it boots up, click Shift+F10 to open Command Prompt. Execute the following two commands one after the other:
Step 3: The first one creates a backup of the utilman.exe file, while the second replaces the original utilman.exe with cmd.exe. You have to do this in order to carry out the next step.
Step 4: Remove the installation disk and reboot your PC. On the login page, click on the icon for Utility Manager. Since you replaced it with the cmd file, Command Prompt should open up. Ignore any error message at this point. Run the following command to reset the password for the locked user account.
Step 5: Remember to replace
Command Prompt might be preferred by most of people especially the ones who are not familiar with commands. And sometimes it fails as there is no permission to perform such a high level task with guest account. So it comes to the second method: use Windows 10 password reset software to bypass the login screen.
In here, we will take LabWin as an example, which is one of the best programs we have tested for Windows password reset. It is a purpose-built utility that can reset any Windows password, even Windows Server administrator accounts. It has been extensively tested on Windows XP up to Windows 10, and is currently the most robust and comprehensive Windows password reset tool you are likely to find. LabWin has an approximate 95% password recovery rate, and will blank Windows password in a matter of minutes.
Find or borrow a different Windows PC or laptop. Then download and install LabWin on that computer. When the program is opened, you can see the following interface:
Insert a DVD or USB drive into the computer and burn the Windows PE file to the disk using the built-in burn function of LabWin. A message will pop up when the burning process is finished successfully.
Remove the disk and insert it into the locked computer. Boot it up and change the boot priority so it boots from the disk accordingly.
In the software interface, select the Windows version, the locked username and click on "Reset Password". The password will be removed instantly. After that, click on "Reboot".
You can now remove the disk and restart your computer, and you will be able to login without using a password. LabWin requires no technical expertise and no additional tools. You won't have to deal with complicated command line work, and all it takes is a borrowed PC and a few minutes to get the job done.
This method can be applied when you're using your Microsoft account to login to Windows 10. To reset your Microsoft account password, you will need to have access to another PC or mobile device with Internet access. You will also need access to the email ID or phone number that you used when registering the Microsoft account.
Go to the Microsoft password reset page here: https://account.live.com/password/reset
Enter your email ID, phone or Skype ID, then fill in the Captcha field and click on "Next". Select the reason for the password change and submit the form. You will now receive a one-time-password (OTP) that you can use to reset your account password.
L0phtCrack is well-known password audit tool that has been around for more than 20 years and is used by a lot of security professionals working in Windows environments. However, updates are few and far between, with the last update coming after nearly seven years. Still, if you have some level of experience working with NTLM password hashes, this will be an easy tool to use.
Download and install l0phtcrack on another PC that's connected to the same network as your locked Windows 10 machine. Launch the program and go to the Import section. You have a choice of six different import options. To use the 'Remote Machine' option, click on "Add" or "Browse" to add the remote machine. You will need admin privileges to do this.
In the "Import from file" section, select "From SAM file". This will allow l0phtcrack to import the password hashes from your locked PC. Click "OK" to proceed. In the next step, define the cracking method. You can use Dictionary, Dictionary/Brute Hybrid, Precomputed or Brute Force crack methods to retrieve the lost password. Click "OK" when you're done.
Next, select the process priority. It is advised that you only use "Realtime" if you're not going to be using the computer for several hours, as this will lock up your OS. Finally, click on "Begin Audit" to crack the password.
Your password can now be obtained either from the real-time audit report or by exporting the results in CSV format, which can be opened in a spreadsheet application like Excel. Since this is primarily a password audit tool to help assess the security profile of networked machines, it might be a little overkill to use it to recover a password. Besides, if you're not familiar with password hashing or cracking applications, it could be a little hard to use.
Please note that if you don't remember your email or phone, you can't use this method to reset your Microsoft account password. In such cases, PassMoz LabWin would be your best bet, since it works with any type of password.
